Saakashvili: No Serious Cabinet Reshuffle Planned

President Saakashvili said “no serious cabinet reshuffle is planned at this stage.”

Speaking at a live televised press conference with a small group of journalist on June 27, Saakashvili said that the cabinet would be submitted to Parliament for a confidence vote as soon as the process of forming parliamentary factions is over.

Saakashvili said that so far there had been much speculation about an expected cabinet reshuffle, but he added “no serious changes” were expected.

Media sources have been speculating that several ministers, including Foreign Minister Eka Tkeshelashvili, Economy Minister Eka Sharashidze and Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili would lose their posts. The latter, however, it has been suggested, would become secretary of the National Security Council. Some media sources reported that PM Lado Gurgenidze might be replaced by Gigi Ugulava, Tbilisi’s mayor.
