Saakashvili Touts Educational Reforms as ‘Necessary’

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said at a news briefing on September 28 that the reformation of the higher educational system is of vital importance for the country. He also admitted that particular staff changes may soon occur at the Tbilisi State University.

He said, Georgian Ambassador to Italy Rusudan Lortkipanidze is a good candidature for the rector’s position, adding that the “election of a new rector is a prerogative of the University.”

The current Rector of the Tbilisi State University Roin Metreveli resigned on November 26 under pressure from the youth movement Kmara (Enough), who accused him of corruption. However, Metreveli returned to his position on November 27 as a result of persistent protest rallies by another part of the student body and staff who demanded his immediate return to the position.

The Scientific Council of the University, as well as the Rector, have already expressed protest regarding a draft law on higher education prepared by the Ministry of Education.

“We need a modern system of education and we will implement the reforms,” the Georgian President said.
