Tbilisi Says Putin-Saakashvili Talks were ‘Successful’

Secretary of the National Security Council Gela Bezhuashvili described talks between the Presidents of Russia and Georgia, which were held in the Kazakh capital, Astana, on the sidelines of the CIS Summit on September 16, as “successful.”

“The talks can be considered as a turning point in the bilateral relations. Despite particular disputes, the talks were rather constructive,” Gela Bezhuashvili said.

He also said that Georgia reiterated its readiness to cooperate with Russia in strategic issues and establish good neighbor relations with it. “We are also ready to cooperate with Russia in combating international terrorism,” Bezhuashvili added.

Speaking about the internal conflicts, the Secretary of the National Security Council stressed that the authorities are trying to settle the South Ossetian and Abkhaz conflicts peacefully and hope that Russia will significantly contribute to this effort.

President Saakashvili himself has not commented regarding the face-to-face meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
