Court Freezes Abashidze’s Assets

The district court in Batumi ruled granted  an appeal by the prosecutor’s office to freeze the assets of the ex-ruler of the Autonomous Republic of Adjaran  Aslan Abashidze and his family on July 14.

According to the Rustavi 2 television a total of 15 companies operating in Adjara,  two villas in the Makhinjauri district of Adjara and tennis courts in Batumi, all owned by Abashidze’s daughter, Diana, have been frozen.

The Georgian General Prosecutor’s Office brought criminal charges against the ex-leader of the Adjara on July 6. Aslan Abashidze is charged with alleged misuse of power and misappropriation of state funds.

Aslan Abashidze fled for Russia on May 6 after receiving security guarantees from the Georgian central authorities. Georgian authorities also pledged that they will not seek for Abashidze’s extradition.

However, Georgian Interior Minister Irakli Okruashvili said later in June that Abashidze and his family members were given non-prosecution guarantees only on Russian soil.
