U.S. Rejects Russian-Proposed Resolution on Abkhazia
U.S. Ambassador to the UN John Bolton said on October 4 that Washington will not support a Russian-proposed draft resolution on the situation in Abkhazia ?in its current form.?
Ambassador Bolton said that the draft resolution ?is unfair and unbalanced.?
?It doesn’t reflect an accurate assessment of the situation on the ground. We’re going to have to work to amend it,? he added.
Russia has proposed a condemnation of Georgia?s actions in Abkhazia, particularly the deployment of the Tbilisi-backed Abkhaz government-in-exile in upper Kodori Gorge and actions of the Georgian authorities aimed at scraping the current Russian-led peacekeeping operation, Russian news agencies reported.
The UN Security Council has to approve the new resolution on Abkhazia by mid-October, as the mandate of the UN Observer Mission in Georgia expires on October 15.
