Lavrov: Scraping Abkhazia Peace Format Counterproductive

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told the UN Security Session on September 20 that attempts to scrap the current format in the Abkhaz conflict zone peace process will be ?counterproductive.?

In his address, Lavrov was speaking about cooperation between the Security Council and regional organizations.

?On the verge of crisis conditions, the CIS peacekeeping forces stationed in the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict zone, in close cooperation with the UN Observer Mission in Georgia, maintain security and stability. We think that any attempt to scrap this format is counterproductive,? Sergey Lavrov said.

President Saakashvili is expected to criticize the current Russian-led peacekeeping and negotiating formats for the South Ossetian and Abkhaz conflicts in his speech to the UN General Assembly Session in New York on September 22.
