Authorities Report on Kodori Rehabilitation
Representatives of the Georgian Ministry for Accommodation and Refugees were set up in upper Kodori Gorge on August 23 in order to administer the distribution of humanitarian aid in the area.
Meanwhile, the authorities reported that the Energy Ministry has launched the construction of a hydroelectric power plant with a total capacity of 250 megawatts in the village of Omarishara, upper Kodori. Construction of four new schools is also underway.
Reconstruction of the main road in Kodori Gorge is set to begin this autumn, with a projected cost of GEL 7 million.
The Georgian authorities are planing to move the currently Tbilisi-based Abkhaz government-in-exile to upper Kodori Gorge in the near future. In preparation for the move, housing units are being installed in the village of Azhara, where state administration offices will be located.
On August 15 President Saakashvili instructed his ministers to speed up rehabilitation projects in the gorge and set up major infrastructure there before October.
