Information Leak Suspected in Robbery Attack on Peacekeepers

Interior Minister of breakaway Abkhazia Otar Khetsia said on August 3 that an attack and robbery on a Russian peacekeepers? convoy was most likely a result of an information leak from the headquarters of the CIS peacekeeping troops stationed in the conflict zone, Apsnipress news agency reported.

Two Russian peacekeepers were killed on August 2 after a bus carrying the payroll for Russian peacekeepers was attacked by unknown gunmen on a road between Gagra and Gudauta to the west of Sokhumi. The attackers opened fire from a car, wounding two officers who were driving an escort vehicle for the bus. Both officers died shortly after being taken to the hospital.

?Only a small group of people could have known that the peacekeepers would be carrying a large sum of money on that day,? Khetsia added.
