Two Peacekeepers Killed in Abkhazia

Two Russian peacekeepers were killed in breakaway Abkhazia on August 2 after a bus carrying the payroll for Russian peacekeepers stationed in the conflict zone was attacked by unknown gunmen, Russian agencies reported.

The attackers opened fire from a car, wounding two officers who were driving an escort vehicle for the bus. Both officers died shortly after being taken to the hospital.

The incident reportedly occurred on a road between Gagra and Gudauta to the west of Sokhumi, the breakaway region?s capital.

Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Viacheslav Sedov told RIA Novosti on August 3 that shortly after the attack Abkhaz police arrested two suspects and several other persons who are suspected of having links with the incident.

Kristian Bzhania, the Abkhaz government?s spokesman, said that 17 million rubles (about USD 635,000) were being transported, ?and the attackers knew this in advance.?
