Saakashvili: Georgia Proved itself as ‘Effective State’

Speaking at a news conference in Warsaw on August 2 after talks with Polish President Lech Kaczyński, Georgian leader Mikheil Saakashvili stressed that the successful anti-criminal operation in Kodori Gorge to disarm rebel militia fighters confirms that his country has turned into “an effective state.”

“A very dangerous provocation was staged against us. There was an attempt to launch a large-scale military confrontation and to create an alternative governmental center in this remote region, which is in the middle of Abkhazia… But those who planned this provocation received the absolutely opposite outcome. Georgia has confirmed that it is a very effective state, as we managed to finish the major part of the operation [in Kodori Gorge] in 24 hours and we managed to disarm [militia fighters] with very minimal casualties,” Saakashvili said.

“We had total support [during the operation in Kodori Gorge]. I mean support of the people; politicians of course have different kind of opinions and some of them even work against the Georgian interests,” he added.
