Bagapsh Warns against Georgia’s NATO Membership

Abkhaz leader Sergey Bagapsh has called on NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer to consider Abkhaz views in making a decision on Georgia’s membership of the alliance, Apsnipress news agency reported on April 2.

“Against the background of political instability and unresolved conflicts, several would-be members of the alliance, particularly Georgia, still consider NATO as a mechanism for the forceful resolution of conflicts in Abkhazia and South Ossetia,” Bagapsh said in a letter sent to the NATO secretary general, according to Apsnipress. “Abkhazia has many times been a victim of aggression by Georgia, making us consider this country a potential source of military provocations.”
