Putin Invited to Saakashvili’s Inauguration

The Russian authorities have received an official invitation to attend the inauguration of President-elect Mikheil Saakashvili, RIA Novosti news agency reported, quoting an official from the Russian Foreign Ministry.

President Putin has been invited, according to the report. Whether he actually attends is unknown.

Earlier today Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said no official invitation had been received.

Saakashvili said on January 12 that Georgia wanted to improve relations with Russia, adding that he would be happy to have President Putin attend his presidential inauguration, planned for January 20.
