Man Suspected of Assaulting Opposition Activist Arrested
Police arrested a man suspected of physically assaulting a member of the opposition New Rights Party, Justice Minister Eka Tkeshelashvili said. New Rights party leader Davit Gamkrelidze is a presidential candidate.
The alleged incident took place in the village of Ude in Samtskhe-Javakheti region. Earlier today the New Rights Party accused the authorities of failing to respond to the “brutal beating.”
Tkeshelashvili, who chairs the government’s inter-agency group dealing with possible election violations, said that the man now in custody had no party affiliations.
Tkeshelashvili also used the press conference to claim that Giorgi Khaindrava from the nine-party opposition coalition, whose candidate is Levan Gachechiladze, “had physically assaulted” a woman at a polling station in Tbilisi.
“A very regretful fact has taken place in the Didube district, where a politician, Giorgi Khaindrava, physically assaulted an ordinary citizen, Dodo Zhorzholiani, who is a supporter of Mikheil Saakashvili,” Tkeshelashvili said.
No immediate comment from Khaindrava was available.
