
Ruling Party Holds Congress
Thousands of ruling National Movement party activists are gathering at the congress in Tbilisi on November 23, which is expected to officially nominate Mikheil Saakashvili as a candidate to run for the January 5 early presidential elections.
In order to run President Saakashvili has to step down before November 26 ? a deadline for registration of candidates. After Saakashvili resigns, the Parliament has to be convened within 48 hours and appoint the elections.
The ruling party congress coincides with the fourth anniversary of the Rose Revolution. Foreign diplomats accredited in Georgia are also invited at the congress. An official from the ruling party, however, said Russian ambassador in Tbilisi, Vyacheslav Kovalenko, was not invited.
