Saakashvili Comments on Ukraine’s Snap Polls
President Saakashvili said on October 1 that Sunday’s early parliamentary elections in Ukraine afforded the country “a unique chance to create a democratic coalition.”
Early results suggest that the two Orange parties – of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and President Victor Yushchenko – have a slight advantage over the current prime minister, Victor Yanukovich’s party.
“This will essentially create a new reality for Ukraine, for the entire region, including Georgia,” President Saakashvili told reporters in Greece. “I call on the entire democratic world to provide moral support to the Ukrainian people, who have undergone the most difficult democratic test.”
