Ban Ki-moon: Kosovo not a Precedent

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said on July 16 that Kosovo was a unique case and its independence would not set a precedent for other regions.
 
?Kosovo is a sui generis issue, and should not create any precedents,? he said at a news briefing in New York.
 
He warned that any further delay on a settlement in Kosovo ?will have a very negative impact, not only in Kosovo but in the wider region.?

The fear is that Russia would recognize Georgia?s breakaway regions if Kosovo gained independence, without a negotiated settlement.
