EC Reaffirms Commitments to S.Ossetia

The European Commission (EC) reiterated on July 5 its commitment to financially contribute to rehabilitation programs in the South Ossetian conflict zone.

The statement is a rebuttal of recent reports in the Georgian media, which had suggested that the EC planned to scale back on its previous commitments because of an unwillingness to cooperate with the secessionist authorities in Tskhinvali.

The statement confirms that the EC will, by the end of July, complete the 3rd phase of a EUR 2.5 million conflict rehabilitation program in South Ossetia. The implementing partners are the OSCE, the UN Development Programme and the UN refugee agency, UNHCR.

The EC has also allocated EUR 2 million to the OSCE-led, multi-donor program on conflict rehabilitation for 2006-2008. The money was pledged at a donor conference in Brussels in June 2006.

“There is no intention to change any of the conditions attached to the above allocations,” the statement reaffirmed.
