Tskhinvali Condemns Sanakoev’s Brussels Visit

South Ossetian authorities have condemned Tbilisi’s attempts to provide Dimitri Sanakoev with international credability.

The secessionist Foreign Ministry said in a statement on June 25 that efforts to promote him internationally were “cynical and futile.”

The head of the Tbilisi-loyal South Ossetian provisional administration, Dimitri Sanakoev, is currently in Brussels, where he is expected to deliver a speech on conflict resolution at the 9th session of the EU-Georgian Parliamentary Cooperation Committee on June 26.

The Foreign Ministry, in its statement, said that support provided by “some foreign countries and international structures” to Georgia encouraged Tbilisi “to undertake steps aimed at further escalation of the conflict.”

“If the international community is really interested in a fair and peaceful settlement of the Georgian-Ossetian conflict… the legitimate authorities of South Ossetia, who really enjoy the trust and support of the population, should be given an opportunity to pursue their inherent rights and use international fora to express their position and vision for the normalization of Georgian-Ossetian relations,” the statement reads.
