Georgia, Russia Agree on Regular Rail Ferry Service

Chief of Georgian Railway Irakli Ezugbaia and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Yakunin, have agreed to launch a regular rail ferry service between the Georgian port of Poti and Kavkaz on Russia’s Black Sea, the Georgian Railway Company said on May 21.

The agreement was reached on the sidelines of a meeting of Railway Transport Council of Commonwealth of Independent States in Kazakhstan on May 19.

A rail ferry service was launched between Poti and Kavkaz in 2005, but only three pilot trips took place; an additional trip was conducted in April 2007.

Currently there is no transport link between the two countries. Russia cut air, sea, land and railway links, and postal communication with Georgia last October, following a spy row.
