Labor Party Leader Slams British Ambassador

Leader of the opposition Labor Party Shalva Natelashvili has demanded that British Ambassador to Georgia Donald McLaren be recalled from the country, saying that a letter of gratitude allegedly sent to the party?s office on behalf of the British Embassy was ?a provocation? staged by the Georgian special services.

On April 18 the Labor Party said it received a letter of gratitude from the British Ambassador for its role in the release of British Royal Marines held captive in Iran. Labor Party representatives claimed that the marines had been released due to efforts made by the Labor Party.

However, on April 19 the British Ambassador strongly denied that he had sent any letter. The Labor Party then sent copies of the letter to the General Prosecutor?s Office, claiming that the British Ambassador might have been pressed by the Georgian authorities to deny having sent the letter.

?I was surprised at the behavior of the British Ambassador. Instead of giving an honest answer to the question ?what happened? and demanding an investigation, he demanded an explanation from us. Such an ambassador cannot stay in his position,? Natelashvili added.
