Georgia, Russia Resume Rail Ferry Service

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Sergey Ivanov welcomes the resumption of a rail ferry service between the Georgian port of Poti and Kavkaz in Russia. The service was resumed on April 10.

Ivanov said the link would have immediate benifits for Armenia in particular. ?The fact that this new ferry can transport 50 carriages already solves one of the key problems of our [Russian-Armenian] relations; I mean the transport blockade of Armenia,? he said while visiting Armenia on April 11.

Russia cut air, sea, land and railway links, and postal communication, with Georgia on October 3, 2006 ? one day after Georgia released four Russian military officers accused by Tbilisi of espionage.
