Government Strikes First ‘Hospital Deal’
The investment company Aword has pledged to build 16 new hospitals with a total of 417 beds throughout Georgia after winning a tender on March 13. In exchange, the government handed over to the company two buildings in downtown Tbilisi currently housing outpatient clinics and medical research centers.
Aword reportedly plans to invest about USD 15 million in the construction of new hospitals.
The Georgian Economy Ministry reported that the company pledged to construct one new hospital with a total of 100 beds in Tbilisi and the rest in provincial regions in the next three years, including the villages of Tsnori, Marneuli, Gudauri, Ozurgeti, Zestaponi, Samtredia, Borjomi, Khashuri, Bakuriani, Dmanisi, Senaki, Kaspi, Dedoplistskaro, Lagodekhi, and the village of Kurta in the South Ossetian conflict zone.
A tender was held in the frames of the ‘100 New Hospitals’ program launched by the Georgian government in January, which envisages the attraction of investments for the construction of new hospitals and outpatient clinics throughout Georgia with a total of 7 800 beds by 2009.
Lado Chipashvili, the Georgian Healthcare Minister, called the deal with Aword “a successful launch of the project.”
