CoE Chief Rejects Abkhaz Polls

The March 4 parliamentary elections in breakaway Abkhazia ?can not be considered as legitimate,? Terry Davis, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, said on March 7.

“Holding democratic elections in Abkhazia (Georgia) will only become possible after a political settlement that fully secures the right of all refugees and displaced persons to a safe and dignified return to their homes,? Terry Davis said in a statement.

?The Council of Europe, which supports the territorial integrity of Georgia, therefore calls on parties to the conflict to step up negotiations towards a peaceful settlement, in the general interest of all the people concerned,” he added.
