Saakashvili Hails Turkey as Georgia’s ‘Window to Europe’

President Saakashvili, who is paying an official visit to Turkey, said on December 20 that Turkey is Georgia’s “friend” and “window to Europe.”

“This year Turkey lifted visa requirements for Georgian citizens, next year all the trade barriers will be removed, and we are also launching a major railway project [Baku-Akhalkalaki-Kars] which will link Georgia’s railway to the European railway network after many years of isolation. So Turkey has really turned into Georgia’s window to Europe, the rest of the world and a better future,” Saakashvili said while speaking at the inauguration of the newly constructed Georgian embassy in Ankara.

President Saakashvili met with his Turkish counterpart in Ankara on December 19 and is expected to meet Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul on December 20.
