MP Suspended

The Parliament suspended MP Gia Nutsubidze on October 28 with a 133 to 0 vote after he was arrested on Friday on corruption charges. Nutsubidze was also stripped of his MP immunity by the Parliament.

The vote enabled the Prosecutor?s Office to demand a two-month pre-trial detention for Nutsubidze, who is accused of an attempt to bribe Deputy Education Minister Temur Samadashvili to gain a favorable deal for a construction firm involved with a state-funded school rehabilitation program.

During the October 28 session some opposition parliamentarians said that they support the suspension of Nutsubidze?s credentials, but they also demanded a probe into the Education Ministry?s activities in respect to the school rehabilitation program.

MP Kakha Kukava of the opposition Conservative Party alleged that Deputy Education Minister Temur Samadashvili could have also been involved in certain wrongdoings and should be investigated by law enforcement agencies.

?Selective justice is absolutely inadmissible and Samadashvili should not escape from a probe just because he is a close ally of [Education Minister Kakha] Lomaia,? MP Kukava said.

Non-partisan MP Valery Gelbakhiani said the case has revealed ?that there is something wrong with state-funded projects? and shown that tenders are not transparent enough.
