Moscow Recalls Georgia Commitment on Meskhetians Repatriation

The Russian Foreign Ministry said on October 20 that the Georgian authorities would better meet the commitments undertaken upon joining the Council of Europe in 1999 on repatriation of Meskhetians to Georgia.

This statement was made in response to President Saakashvili?s calls for the citizens of Georgia regardless of their nationalities to return to their native country.

?Tbilisi has not followed its commitment to pass a law by the end of 2005 on repatriation of Meskhetians… At the same time, Tbilisi does not hide that it plans to settle Meskhetians not on their historical place [Samtskhe-Javakheti region], but in various regions of Georgia,? Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Kaminin said.

?Such irresponsible attitude of the Georgian leadership towards its international commitments demonstrates a real approach of Tbilisi towards the solution of national minorities? problems,? the Russian Foreign Ministry official said.
