City Council Elects Tbilisi Mayor

As expected, Gigi Ugulava was elected by the Tbilisi city council (Sakrebulo) as the capital city Mayor on October 12.

The Sakrebulo, where 34 out of 37 seats are occupied by the ruling National Movement party, held its inaugural session following the October 5 local self-governance elections.

Three opposition party Sakrebulo members boycotted the session.

Former Sakrebulo chairman Zaza Begashvili, also from the ruling party, was re-elected for the position on October 12.
