UN, Georgian Officials Sign Development Action Plan
Kalman Mizsei, UN Assistant Secretary General and UN Development Program Director for Europe and the CIS and Zurab Nogaideli, the Georgian Prime Minister signed on July 17 UNDP?s Country Programme Action Plan for 2006-2010.
Within the frames of the five-year program USD 70 million will be allocated to the following priority fields: poverty reduction, democratic governance and decentralization, judicial system, development of small business, protection of the environment, crisis prevention and improvement of living conditions and status of internally displaced persons.
?These are the fields, which are most important today, however if a new necessity emerges we will be flexible,? Kalman Mizsei said on July 17.
During the visit the UN Assistant Secretary General met with President Saakashvili to discuss economic reforms. Kalman Mizsei hailed the ongoing reforms in the country, saying that the UNDP has model relations with Georgia within past two and a half years.
?This is the most effective and qualified government in the post-Soviet space, since unlike similar poor countries, it dictates the donors, in which fields it needs assistance,? Kalman Mizsei.
He said that despite ?the courageous and successful? reforms implemented by the government, there still are certain obstacles, which should be overcome.
