Abkhazia Rejects Tbilisi’s Peace Plan Proposals

Foreign Minister of breakaway Abkhazia Sergey Shamba said on June 1 that Tbilisi’s proposals over a peace plan will fail to help move the two sides’ positions closer, RIA Novosti news agency reported.

Shamba, who was speaking at a news conference in Sokhumi, said that the Georgian side’s proposals over resolution of the Abkhaz conflict, dubbed the ‘roadmap,’ were discussed by Abkhaz officials at a session of the National Security Council.

“We found nothing in these proposals that could make our positions closer,” Sergey Shamba said.

Details of the Tbilisi’s peace plan proposals are unknown, as the document remains confidential.

Shamba said that if Georgia is interested in peaceful resolution of the conflict, Tbilisi should apologize for triggering the armed confrontation in early 90s and should also lift the economic blockade of the region. He also added that recognition of Abkhazia’s independence should be a final step in conflict resolution.
