Moscow Studies Tbilisi’s Draft Law on S.Ossetia Restitution
The Russian side is currently studying a draft law on property restitution for the victims of the South Ossetian conflict, which has been prepared by the Georgian government, the Russian Foreign Ministry informed Civil Georgia on May 26 upon request.
The Georgian government has recently submitted the draft law on property restitution to the Parliament for consideration. Georgia undertook a commitment to pass a law on property restitution in 1999 while joining the Council of Europe.
The draft law recognizes the right of all internally displaced persons and refugees to return to their houses if they wish to return and can prove the ownership rights for the property.
The South Ossetian side has already downplayed the draft law as part of Tbilisi’s “PR campaign.”
The Russian Foreign Ministry said that it will comment on the draft law only after the document is studied.
