Georgia Develops Draft Law on Border Police

The Georgian Border Guard Department will be transformed into a border police, according to a draft law which was presented at a conference in Tbilisi on May 8.


Chief of the German Federal Police Udo Burkholder, Georgian Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili, as well as other Georgian officials attended the presentation of the draft law, which has already been submitted to the Parliament for consideration. The draft law was developed by the Georgian Border Guard Department as part of ongoing reforms in the system with the active involvement of German experts, the Georgian Border Guard Department reported.


Currently, the Border Guard Department is a structural unit of the Interior Ministry, but at the same time it is part of the Georgian armed forces. According to the draft law, the Border Guard Department will be transferred to the subordination of the General Staff of the Armed Forces only in cases of hostilities.
