Opposition Appeals Constitutional Court over Ex-MP’s Dismissal
Representatives of the opposition Republican Party and MP Kakha Kukava from the opposition Conservative party have appealed to the Constitution Court of Georgia to cancel the Parliament’s March 31 decision to strip Valeri Gelashvili of his MP credentials.
The Parliament stripped Gelashvili of the Republican Party of his MP credentials after the parliamentary majority accused him of alleged involvement in the management of his business, an act which is prohibited by the Constitution.
The decision led the parliamentary opposition to boycott the parliamentary plenary sessions. The opposition claims that the Parliament’s decision was marred with legal flaws and described it as “persecution of political opponents.”
Meanwhile, reports circulated on April 13 say that the Tax Inspectorate has launched a probe into the Evra construction company, which was founded by Valery Gelashvili and frozen its assets. The opposition has already described this move of the authorities as “a continuation of Gelashvili’s persecution.” The company has invested in Georgia about USD 10 million over recent years, according to an Evra representative.
