Tbilisi, Tskhinvali Discuss Draft Law on Restitution

The Georgian and South Ossetian sides launched discussions in Vladikavkaz on March 30 of the Georgian-proposed draft law on property restitution to the victims of the South Ossetian conflict.

According to the Georgian Justice Ministry, the draft law envisages the creation of a commission on a parity basis, which will be composed of representatives of the Georgian and South Ossetian sides, as well as international organizations.

Georgia undertook a commitment to pass a law on property restitution in 1999 while joining the Council of Europe.

According to the Georgian authorities, the draft law was welcomed by the Council of Europe’s (CoE) Venice Commision – the advisory body for constitutional issues –  on March 19.
