Kokoity Hopeful that Russia’s North Caucasus Republics Will Assist if Hostilities Ensue

South Ossetian leader Eduard Kokoity said at a news conference in Moscow on February 7 that the South Ossetian forces “are well-prepared to repel any possible Georgian aggression” but also added that Russia’s “North Caucasus republics” will render assistance to South Ossetia in the event of hostilities.

“A majority of Ossetian people lives in [Russia’s] North Ossetia and they will not stand aside, nor will other North Caucasus republics… There is also a bilateral agreement between Abkhazia and South Ossetia on mutual military assistance and we will definitely help each other in cases of need,” Interfax news agency reported quoting Kokoity as saying.
