PM: Georgia has a ‘Well-Established’ Emergency Gas Alternative

Georgian Prime Minister Zurab Nogaideli said on January 30 that the recent energy crisis was “like a workout” for the country’s authorities, which prompted the government to secure alternative sources of gas supplies in times of emergency.

“The start of Iranian gas flowing [to Georgia] means that if a similar [incident on gas pipeline in Russia] occurs in the future we will start receiving gas from alternative sources much faster and this is already a very well-established mechanism,” PM Zurab Nogaideli said.

2 million cubic meters of Iranian gas per-day started flowing to Georgia on January 30, via Azerbaijan.

Nogaideli was speaking at a session of the country’s energy council, which discussed the current situation, as well as several investment projects which are planned for Georgia’s energy system.
