U.S. Official: “Azerbajani Gas is Headed into Armenia”

The U.S. Department of State spokesman Sean McCormack said on January 23 that ?Azerbaijani gas is headed into Armenia? after two gas pipelines exploded in Russia?s North Ossetia.

?I understand now that gas is flowing from Azerbaijan to Georgia and I believe that there’s electricity going from Turkey into Georgia as well [power line was also blown up in North Caucasus on January 22], and there were some disruption to gas flows in Armenia. So Azerbaijani gas is headed into Armenia,? Sean McCormack said at a news briefing.

But he did not elaborate further on this issue and did not specify how the Azeri gas reaches Armenia. The only way for the Azeri gas to reach Armenia is via Georgia.

If confirmed, it is most likely that the news will trigger strong protest from Baku towards Georgia.

But Georgian Energy Minister Nika Gilauri and Georgia?s Ambassador to Azerbaijan Zurab Gumberidze have both strongly denied that gas from Azerbaijan is being delivered to Armenia, the Georgian InterPressNews agency reported.
