Russian Ambassador Says ‘Some’ Terrorists Remain in Pankisi

Russian Ambassador to Georgia Vladimir Chkhikvishvili said on January 23 that although the situation has improved in Georgia’s Pankisi gorge, some terrorist still remain there.

“Although the situation there is not the same as it was two years ago some terrorists still remain there. We had a better summer [from the security point of view on the border] thanks to the Russian and Georgian border guards. However certain threats still exists,” Chkhikvishvili said at a news conference.

The Russian Ambassador also noted that the situation on the border has improved since the border guards of the two countries started cooperating closely and exchanging information.

The Russian media reported last week that Russian law enforcement agencies have heightened security measures at the borders in the North Caucasus, citing the “presence of international terrorists in the Pankisi gorge.”
