Sokhumi Rejects Tbilisi’s Document on Security Guarantees
UN Secretary General’s Special Representative to Georgia Heidi Tagliavini met with Abkhaz leader Sergey Bagapsh and Foreign Minister Sergey Shamba on January 18 in Sokhumi and submitted a draft of the Georgian-Abkhaz agreement on security guarantees and non-resumption of hostilities amended by the Georgian side, Apsnypress news agency reported.
Sergey Bagapsh said that the submitted draft absolutely differs from the previously agreed one, adding that the essential amendments made by the Georgian side are unacceptable for Sokhumi. However, the Abkhaz side did not specify the details of proposed amendments.
“This is practically another document, which needs new consideration,” Apsnypress quoted Abkhaz Foreign Minister Sergey Shamba as saying.
The Georgian side initiated the development of an agreement on security guarantees and non-resumption of hostilities last August. In early December the sides stated that the document was “actually” ready for signing.
