Armenian Community in Abkhazia Concerned over ‘Anti-Armenian’ Trends

Leaders of the Armenian community residing in breakaway Abkhazia met with the President and top leadership of the unrecognized republic on January 12 to express protest regarding “some negative cases which have been observed recently in respect of the Armenian population in the republic,” Apsnipress news agency reported.

An explosive went off outside the Armenian school in Sokhumi on New Year’s Eve and leaflets containing, as representatives of the Armenian community put it, “anti-Armenian” statements appeared in the breakaway region’s capital.

“Similar cases were observed recently, but we never wanted to dramatize the situation, although we want to hear the authorities’ position,” Apsnipress quoted Mariet Topchian, co-chairperson of the Council of the Armenian Community, as saying during the meeting with Abkhaz leader Sergey Bagapsh.

The Abkhaz leader stated that Abkhazia was always known for its “good inter-community relations and we will not allow a split of the society.”

He admitted that the Abkhaz leadership failed to pay due attention to solving the Armenian community’s problems. “But now the government and the parliament will spare no effort to solve all these problems,” he added.
