Bird Flu ‘Panic’ Hits Poultry Farms
The Georgian daily 24 Saati (24 Hours) reported on January 13 that the “bird flu panic” in Georgia was a blow for Georgian poultry farms, which say that poultry sales “have actually stopped since New Years.”
Poultry production firms are on the verge of bankruptcy, but the situation will further deteriorate if there is a need to destroy poultry, “as insurance of poultry businesses is not in practice in Georgia.”
“But government members are not speaking about this threat. It is still unclear how the government plans to overcome the possible crisis – whether those measures carried out by the authorities are enough to save the poultry sector,” the paper writes, adding that the authorities “are definitely inconsistent in their efforts.”
