New Coalition Pushes Direct Elections of Mayors
The coalition of opposition political parties and public organizations, which unites the People?s Forum for Welfare and Democracy, the Republicans, the Industrialists, the Labor party and various public organizations, will push the issue of direct elections of the Tbilisi Mayor at a meeting on December 12.
In order to implement this legislative initiative the coalition will launch a collection of signatures among the population.
According to the Constitution of Georgia, a collection of at least 30,000 voters’ signatures must be obtained to push forth a legislative initiative. The coalition calls on the population of Tbilisi to actively participate in the campaign of collecting signatures.
The new rule of electing a City Council and the Tbilisi Mayor was approved by the Parliament on July 1. The opposition parties condemned this new rule as undemocratic.
