Saakashvili, Aliyev Discussed Developments in Azerbaijan
Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili and his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev discussed recent developments in Azerbaijan during a phone conversation on October 24, the Azerbaijani state news agency AzerTag reported.
The Azerbaijani President informed Mikheil Saakashvili about the measures being undertaken by the Azeri authorities ?to further develop democracy in Azerbaijan? and to eradicate ?illegal, criminal actions directed against the statehood.?
The Azeri security forces dispersed an opposition rally on October 23 in Baku ahead of the November 6 parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan.
Meanwhile, exiled Azeri opposition leader Rasul Guliyev, who failed to return to Azerbaijan last week as planned and was reportedly barred from landing in Baku, spoke against officials in Tbilisi and complained in an interview with the Tbilisi-based Imedi television, that the Georgian authorities warned he would have been arrested if he had arrived in Georgia. He also criticized President Saakashvili for hailing Ilham Aliyev?s policy as the right course for the country.
