OSCE Envoy Speaks of South Ossetia Conflict

The Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office for Georgia Mircea Dan Geoana, who visited Georgia last week, said the OSCE is ready to deliver ?practical issues? that can help defuse tensions in the South Ossetian conflict zone, the OSCE press office reported on October 13.

Mircea Dan Geoana visited parts of Georgia, including the breakaway South Ossetian capital Tskhinvali, on October 7.

?The OSCE is prepared to work and deliver on a variety of practical issues on the ground, such as demilitarization of the zone of conflict, the Needs Assessment Study put forward by the OSCE Mission to Georgia, as well as the OSCE-proposed joint policing initiative for the zone of conflict,? Mircea Dan Geoana said.

He also urged the Georgian and South Ossetian sides to make progress in defusing tensions before the OSCE Ministerial Council, scheduled for December 5-6 in Ljubljana.

“This would demonstrate the constructive approach of both sides and constitute a good basis for moving to the more complicated issues of the political process,” Mircea Dan Geoana said.

“The Georgian and South Ossetian sides must take a step towards reopening the dialogue in order to calm down existing tensions and proceed with demilitarization,” he added.
