EU-South Caucasus Talks over Neighborhood Policy Delayed

Talks between the EU and the South Caucasus states over cooperation in frames of the European Neighborhood Policy (ENP) has been postponed for unspecified period of time, Heikki Talvitie, the EU?s Special Representative to the South Caucasus, said on September 30.

He cited problems which emerged in relationship between Azerbaijan and one of the EU-member countries as the reason of the delay. The EU diplomat specified neither the nature of the problem nor the EU-member country which has problems with Azerbaijan.

But according to the unofficial information, Azerbaijan is at odds with Cyprus, as Baku inclines towards a closer tie with the Turkish Cypriot authorities.

Heikki Talvitie said that the EU adheres to the policy of equal treatment towards all three countries of the region in the process of talks, but added that if Azerbaijan fails to normalize its ties with one of the EU-member states, the European Union will launch separate talks with only Georgia and Armenia.
