MPs to Pass ‘Tough’ Resolution on Russian Peacekeepers

Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze said on September 26 that lawmakers are in the process of working over a resolution criticizing the Russian peacekeeping forces’ role in the Abkhazian and South Ossetian conflict zones.

“A decree by the Parliament over the peacekeepers will be very tough,” she told reporters.

Burjanadze said that the peacekeeping forces “demonstrated helplessness” when the South Ossetian side violated all agreements reached between the conflicting sides since 1992 by allowing the hardware of the South Ossetian military into Tskhinvali on September 20, which was used to mark the unrecognized republic’s independence day.

The Parliamentary Chairperson said that if nothing changes in the near future, “the Georgian Parliament will push the issue of withdrawal of the peacekeeping troops from the country.”

It is most likely that this draft of resolution, which was developed in cooperation with the executive government, will not demand that the Russian peacekeepers withdraw.

The draft resolution will apparently be discussed and passed by the Georgian lawmakers at a parliamentary session on September 27.
