Saakashvili: Pressure on Media is an Attack on Presidency
At the briefing on September 9, President Mikhei Saakashvili stressed that free media is a necessary condition for success in ongoing reforms.
?If somebody dared to put pressure on media I would be his worst enemy. It is an attack on my own prerogatives, ideals and authority,? Saakashvili is quoted by his press-service.
A statement comes on the wake of a scandal related to arrest of the anchor and co-founder of TV 202, who was accused of blackmailing an MP from the ruling National Movement party. Opposition and some civil society representatives regard the arrest as a sign of pressure on independent media by the corrupt officials.
