Chief of Military Police Appointed
The Georgian media reported on August 21 that Mamuka Mujiri was appointed as the chief of the newly created Military Police ? a body of the Defense Ministry, which will be in charge of maintaining order and discipline in military units.
Mamuka Mujiri previously served as chief of the criminal department of the Georgian Interior Ministry.
Reports also say that Aleksandre Sukhitashvili, the ex-chief of the Shida Kartli police, was appointed as the deputy chief of the Military Police.
Georgian media speculates that these new appointments in the Defense Ministry can be one more sign of disagreements allegedly persisting between Defense Minister Irakli Okruashvili and Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili.
Both Mujiri and Sukhitashvili were sacked by the Interior Minister. Sukhitashvili was dismissed from the position of the chief of Shida Kartli regional police in March after President Saakashvili demanded that his structure intensify the fight against contraband and alleged that some local high-level police officials were involved in smuggling.
