Government Registers Persons for Poverty Relief Program

The Georgian government has launched registration of persons living below the poverty line starting from August 15, as a part of an assistance program designed by the authorities for these people.

The registration procedure foresees that those persons who think that they live below the poverty line should apply to local district governmental bodies for registration. There, experts will assess the families that apply and determine if they are eligible for this assistance program.

The government initially planned to launch the distribution of allowances for low-income families in the frames of the program this November, but postponed the measure until June 2006, citing increased budgetary expenditures. The amount of the assistance to be given has not been announced.
