Alasania Comments on Abkhaz Railway

Chairman of the Tbilisi-based Abkhaz government-in-exile Irakli Alasania said in an interview with the news agency Novosti Gruziya on August 8 that ?no political decision has been made yet? in regard to reopening the strech of the Trans Caucasian Railway that runs through breakaway Abkhazia.

?Currently, discussions are underway about the possible reopening of the railway only on the level of experts,? said Alasania, who also serves as the Georgian President?s representative in Abkhaz conflict resolution issues.

A group of Georgian experts will reportedly leave for the Abkhaz capital of Sokhumi on August 9 to commence an assessment of the current situation of the railway in Abkhazia, together with counterparts from Abkhazia and Russia.

Irakli Alasania said that talks about reopening the railway will bring ?sensitive issues? to the agenda, including customs controls. He said that the Georgian side will demand the establishment of a customs checkpoint on the river Psou, at Abkhaz section of the Russo-Georgian state border.

?We have not yet held talks about this kind sensitive issue. These will be very difficult consultations? but I think that it is possible to find a compromise,? Alasania said.
