‘Group of Friends’ Call on Sokhumi for Talks
In a joint statement issued on July 22 the Group of Friends of the UN Secretary-General on Georgia –, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States – expressed regret over the Abkhaz side’s refusal to participate in talks scheduled in Tbilisi for July 22 in frames of UN-led Geneva process.
“The Group of Friends welcomes the participation of the Georgian side in today’s meeting and its constructive engagement in the United Nations-led Geneva process. At the same time, the Group of Friends regrets that the Abkhaz side has cancelled its participation in today’s meeting citing ongoing procedures surrounding the detention of a Turkish vessel on 2 July 2005. The Group of Friends believes that this is a missed opportunity for the Abkhaz side to express its views,” the statement reads.
